  • We are starting to see signs of local councils and the Government cracking down on rogue landlords.

    Here are few that have come across my industry news this month…

    BRISTOL LANDLORD FINED £22,000

    This landlord owned 34 properties and failed in her duty to deal with issues brought to her attention on her rental properties. The tribunal fined her £22,000 as well as a banning order for five years!

    GOVERNMENT STARTS NAMING AND SHAMING LANDLORDS

    The government has started to publicly name and shame landlords as part of the ‘Levelling up Housing and Communities’. In 2020/21 the Ombudsman issued a total of 3,455 orders and awarded compensation totalling £450,000.

    CLACTON LANDLORD FINED £23,000

    This landlord owned 2 HMOs and failed to comply under health and safety of the tenants. This fine was originally set at £90,000 but under appeal was reduced to £23,000.

    COVENTRY LANDLORD FINED £1,600

    This landlord failed to have an EICR (otherwise known as an electrical safety certificate) and was fined £1,600. Coventry Council are also looking to implement a banning order on this particular landlord.

    HARINGEY LANDLORD FINED £1,000

    This landlord failed to renew his HMO Licence, the council are also looking at a rent repayment order of the last 12 months.

    REMEMBER, FROM 1ST OCTOBER 2022, ALL RENTAL PROPERTIES MUST HAVE A CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM. THE GOVERNMENT HAVE CONFIRMED NO EXCUSE AFTER THIS DATE!
